If there are half-empty paint cans, old motor oil or dead batteries in your shed, the Police Jury has a day for them.

The parish will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Vermilion Parish Solid Waste Plant, according to a flyer the Police Jury posted. You must bring identification showing you live in Vermilion Parish. Businesses cannot drop off commercial waste.

What you can bring

  • Motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid and other car maintenance products
  • Latex and oil-based paints, stains, thinners and solvents
  • Aerosol cans
  • Household cleaners, including acids, bleach, furniture polish and wax
  • Weed killers, bug sprays and other pesticides
  • Household and car batteries
  • Tires, off the rim only
  • Recyclables: aluminum, tin and steel cans; newspapers, magazines, junk mail and cardboard; and plastics marked No. 1 or No. 2

What to leave at home

Unlabeled containers, anything leaking, medicines and medical waste, ammunition, flares, fireworks or explosives, smoke detectors, gas or propane cylinders, and building junk such as sinks, floor tile, siding and old appliances. Parish workers can turn away anything they consider unsafe.

How to get there

From U.S. 167, turn west on LA 696 and go about three-quarters of a mile, then turn north on Birch Road and follow it to the end. Parish workers will direct you from there.
