The Vermilion Council on Aging plans to ask the Police Jury for money tied to SpaceX on Wednesday, and jurors expect to go behind closed doors to talk about the lawsuit that seeks to undo the parish’s Starbase Louisiana tax deal, according to committee agendas the parish posted this week.

The Vermilion Times read every page of the agenda packet. Nothing below comes from another news outlet.

When and where

The committees meet Wednesday, Nov. 4, on the second floor of the Courthouse Building, 100 N. State St., Abbeville, in the Police Jury meeting room. The Coastal Protection & Restoration Committee starts at 4 p.m. The 911, Courthouse/General Needs, Public Works, Finance and Public Road committees follow, according to a notice from Parish Administrator Keith Roy dated Oct. 30.

Each committee agenda opens with a period for public comment on any item it will consider. That is your chance to speak.

SpaceX on the agenda

Council on Aging request. Clare Martin of the Vermilion Council on Aging is listed on the Courthouse/General Needs agenda with a “Request for SpaceX Related Funding.” The agenda does not say how much she will ask for or what the money would pay for.

The lawsuit, in private. Under legal counsel, the same committee lists an executive session to discuss Vermilion Citizens Coalition Inc., Dr. Robert J. Young III, Rebecca C. Young and Cheryl Choate v. Industrial Development Board of the Parish of Vermilion, Louisiana Inc. and Vermilion Parish Police Jury. That is the open-meetings suit asking a court to void the SpaceX tax agreement. Executive sessions are closed to the public, but any vote must be taken in open session.

Also on the agendas

  • Coastal committee: Mike Pugh of Royal Engineering has time on the agenda, along with reports from the parish engineer, the parish’s coastal advocate and the parish administrator. At its Oct. 21 meeting, the jury’s agenda carried a coastal committee recommendation to ask Royal Engineering to attend committee meetings.
  • Courthouse/General Needs: presentations from Brandon Trahan, CEO of LaMay Group; Chris Canty of Waterfleet; Pastor August of Nehemiah Projects; and the firm Hunt, Guillot & Associates, which will pitch consulting services. Lloyd Campisi will present the parish’s insurance renewal, and Ebony Cooksey Thomas of Nextlink Internet will give an update on the Gumbo 2.0 broadband program.
  • Public Works: reports from Landfill Superintendent and Mosquito Control Director Billy Noegel, Public Works Director Gary Guidry, and John Sonnier, the coyote and USDA beaver specialist. Jurors also list an executive session on possible litigation, after a written demand, against Great Midwest Insurance Company over the Chenier Au Tigre Gap Closure Project.
  • Finance and Public Road: reports from the parish administrator, the parish engineer, legal counsel and the road supervisor.

Committee recommendations go to the full Police Jury for a final vote at a later regular meeting.

Still in effect: the burn ban

The parish-wide burn ban that began Oct. 15 remains in force until the Police Jury lifts it by a new proclamation, according to the parish’s posted notice. It bars open burning of brush, yard waste and similar debris, with limited exceptions such as permitted agricultural burning.

The Vermilion Times will report what the committees decide.
